It is not just gardens but your fruit bearing shrubs and trees. My Mom's blueberries developed a fungus this year. Normally she puts away pounds of blueberries but her crop was wiped out. You are very correct @duane one needs to store or learn how to save ones food source from pests and disease. Gardening is hard. The dreams of throw some seeds in the dirt and eating fresh produce were quickly smashed. Each growing season I learn something new.Never is one growing season the same as the next. Last year I tried straw bale gardening and containers. The containers were better then the bales. I also learned close proximity to a chicken coop that has not been cleaned bring lots of bugs. My neighbor across the fence was the owner of the chickens
Now I think we are talking about the real issues we face in our attempts to prepare and Bishop is the best example of the long run. Government used to say food etc for 3 days, now 2 weeks. Is 1 year the magic number, if longer, one growing season, would you be able to resupply? What if you couldn't get sulfur or something and late blight destroys everything? Do you have fertilizer, seeds, knowledge to get thru 2nd year if the trucks don't run and Agway and Tractor Supply are closed? Deer manure is not too efficient for gardening and if people are starving, there will no doubt be a shortage of domestic animal manure, .if they are not eaten, the government or local war lord will probably be holding them for your own good and their benefit. I love gardening, hoard resources, treat it like a video game as a challenge, learning device, good way to relax, and in the real world, a better investment for preps than that 3 rd AR. YMMV,
