I work two week hitches on remote drilling sites so I always try to download things to watch while I'm out. Movies, TV shows etc. I recently came across a series I hadn't seen before. It is on History 2 channel. It is called "10 Things You Don't Know About ....".
I just watched the pilot episode it was "10 Things You Don't Know About Benjamin Franklin".
I am a bit of a history buff, especially about the founding fathers, so I was familiar with most of the ten. He was a renowned womanizer, he didn't actually fly a kite in thunderstorm etc. But one I didn't know and found it pretty fascinating.
Franklin was a printer by trade and he started and ran a small newspaper in Philadelphia. He came up with the idea of an editorial page and a gossip page. This made his newspaper very popular and he was actually the first printer in the colonies to actually make a profit from selling newspapers. He then had the idea to reinvest those profits into more printing presses and set up and office in each of the 13 colonies. He in effect started the very first news network. His paper was so popular that it was widely read in every colony. It was the first time that a free flow of editorials, ideas, thoughts and opinions could be easily shared among all of the colonists. It is said that the colonists of that time were likely the most well read people on the planet. And certainly the most up to date on current events. This in no small part actually led to the revolutionary war. It may never have happened if it weren't for Ben Franklin and his news network.
I can't help but relate that to today. The lamestream bootlicking press of our time and the severe dumbing down of our people. I watch some of these "man in the street" interviews and it just astounds me at the ignorance of people today. Even my own kids and their friends, they don't have a clue about what is happening in the world, what the political dynamics are etc.

I am looking forward to watching some more of the episodes. I have 3 more , "10 Things You Don't Know About Abraham Lincoln/J. Edgar Hoover/ The Mormons" Should be interesting.

 

I have often thought that the "reporters" conducting those "man in the street" interviews go out of their way to pick the dumb clucks to put on camera. (Or maybe it's the dumb clucks that step up hoping for their 15 seconds of fame.)

 

They put on what has the most entertainment value for sure. If it bleeds it leads, even a figurative bleeding of the mind. But I would wager the ratio of dumb clucks to informed clucks in the world is a vast number. I don't think they have to look to long and hard to find the dumb ones.
What I took from the 10 Things... show was that the colonists were very well read and well informed for people of their time. Something that I think we severely lack in our modern time.
