I just read The Last Voyage of Captain James Cook. I’d recommend it. I’d forgotten how he perished. Tough bastards doing what they did.
I’m reading Operation Heartbeat. I give it two thumbs so far. It’s about Vietnam, the Christian missionary angle. No wonder Mom slipped it into my bag on last visit. Lol.
I read Kon-Tiki. They were crazy. Good book though. There’s an old documentary on YouTube about this.
Thor was a Commando in WWII and was part of the taem that destroyed the dam making Heavy Water. Most the rest of the crew were former Commando/SES types. They weren't crazy - they were total badasses. Thor Heyerdahl - Wikipedia the guys bio reads like an adventure book..... I got hooked on his books with Fatu Hiva
Interesting book just done In the early 1970s, he conceived the idea of setting "the altitude record for sailing" by sailing both the Dead Sea (the lowest open water in the world) and Lake Titicaca, which is 3,812 meters (12,507 ft) up in the Andes Mountains. He sailed to Israel, and trucked his sailboat to the Dead Sea. Though he was not allowed to launch his boat, he did make a brief sail on the Sea in an Israeli naval officer's sailboat. The book - The Incredible Voyage: A Personal Odyssey 19 foot Around the world No engine The only bummer is that it it paper only.
No engine? What, then, is that thing hanging along side the rudder? (Yeah, I know, that's for maneuvering not cruising.)
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius currently. Previous was Tequila Junction by H. John Poole Next is Where the crawdads sing by Delia Owens
closest drawing I could find on his type boat. He used a set of oars or a Roh. Like this guy Roger Banes has a most interesting channel He routinely crosses the English channel in his dinghy to camp in France. Funest video? sailing in the Upper Thames.....
I read and commented on this in 2009-2010 as Mike was posting it. Even incomplete it is a great read.
I just finished Survival in the Killing Fields. I give it two thumbs but......Horrific. I just learned my good buddy was from the same province. Battambang. Count your blessings I say.
Joe Pickett series. Just finished #13 of 20 books. I get them, as available, by Ebook from the library and read on my Kindle. "The Joe Pickett series is a series of murder mystery novels written by well known American author named C.J. Box. Each and every book in the Joe Pickett series revolves around the chief protagonist named Joe Pickett. He is depicted as a game warden living in Wyoming. Author Box says that Joe does not think of himself as an action hero, but a humble person who always wants to do the correct things in life. But somehow, he often ends up solving numerous murder cases happening around him."
Currently reading “Nourishing traditions” by Sally Fallon, its a diet book but about a varied diet and has recipes for just about any common animal part (including a bone broth one that I am wanting to try). Its 600 pages long so not a light read.
