"Tour de Apalachicola V" is done and over.....

    Pictures by Seawolf1090 - Photobucket

Here is my Photobucket site with pics from our just completed Dual Sport Motorcycle Meet. Weather began on the chilly side - thirty degrees Friday morning. Was a low in the fifties Saturday night. Rained Friday night and all day Saturday though.
Friday we held our biggest single "Group Ride" ever - 20 riders altogether! They rode from 10:30 that morning, til they rode in just before dark. Had several rest and photo stops, and a few major 'water crossings'! None was too awefully deep, but two bikes did get dropped into the drink and had to be flushed out - take spark plugs off and pump the water out!
We had ten RVs, from popups to big Trailers. One PU truck camper, and a few Toy Haulers (provision inside for the bikes).
I took my little bivytent, but it proved cramped and cold - I spent Thursday night in one buddy's popup, sharing with him. Then on Saturday night, I had the use of another buddy's smaller popup, as he was sleeping at an off-site fishing cabin. Hmmm..... I could get used to using popups!
On Friday night, it began raining about midnight, but I had already moved my air matress and blankets inside the roofed over shelter (concrete floor) - like the cowboys of "the Old West", I slept with my 'horse'!
We had no onsite kitchen facility this year, so we foraged for our meals. We had "Angel's Seafood By The Dam" right next door, and Angel had 10% discount cards for our group - a nice bennie we had not expected!
Miss Linda, our camp hostess, realy made us all at home and was great. She made sure we had hookups for the RVs and electrical and water for the tent sites. Since she took the money and 'rode herd' on this group, it took a lot of the trouble off me. We were right on the Oklocknee River just below the Lake Talquin Dam, with a boatramp - but nobody brought a boat or fishing gear.
I bailed out Sunday afternoon, while a few riders stayed that night and pulled out Monday morning.
So, our fifth annual campout was a good success! We look forward to doing it again next year!

    Oops.....[doh]

Nothing like shelling out some more coin for some new pipes and floorboards...and possibly the crash bar.

I wonder if his bike got a little squirrelly during that cornering maneuver?

I have ground my pipes off pretty good so far, 1/2 inch on the tips..LOL
I like to look at it as character and wouldn't replace them.

    Engine repair question.

Rebuilding an 85 honda XR 250R. 250 cc, first time this deep in an engine.

I've replaced the valve guides and the old valve won't slide into the new valve guides.

Do I have to ream the guides to get the valves in? Is this always the situation when replacing valve guides? How does one ream a valve guide? Can you use a drill? Do you absolutely need cutting oil?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do not ream the guides or turn the valve stems. You almost certainly have the wrong part. I'm not familiar with that engine, but I have run into a couple cases where the intake and exhaust valves had different stem diameters.

I'll look into the parts, but I'm sure the guides were correct. 4 guides, 2 for exhaust 2 for intake, part numbers matched the manual. No valve fits in any of the guides.

Should I measure the OD of the stems and the ID of the guides?

The reamer I bought goes through the old guides but not through the new guides. Maybe wrong ID but right OD of guides?

I had the great good fortune to peddle parts for a few months some years back. They do mismatch things now and then. If there was a change in the engine config during the life of the model, dealers can and often do fail to update the microfiche files. (That tell you how far back it was?) None of the publications (like Haynes and Clymers) ever get it all sorted out. If you have the Honda manual, there should be a supplement covering updates.

I've never seen a case that called for reaming the guides. Take that with a grain of salt, since I've not seen all the possibles --

Cannot hurt to measure both the sleeve IDs and stem ODs. Might as well check the reamer, too. Use a mic, a vernier might not be precise enough, and remember that the difference is what counts, not the absolute value of the reading. Two or three places along the stems and both ends of the guides, and take the numbers (and parts) with you to your fave parts purveyor and see what he has to say.

    Will do, Thanks Ghrit.

a machine shop, a motorcycle repair shop and the dealer won't do valve guides in my area. So I'm actually stuck doing it, I'd rather pay some one though.

This is to damn funny. PETA (People Eating Tiny Animals) picked the wrong inclusive. [IMG] [IMG]

Even if it turns out not to be true, still funny ....

    Johnstown, PA (GlossyNews)
    – Local and state police scoured the hills outside rural Johnstown, Pennsylvania, after reports of three animal rights activists going missing after attempting to protest the wearing of leather at a large motorcycle[IMG] gang rally this weekend. Two others, previously reported missing, were discovered by fast food workers “duct taped inside several fast food restaurant dumpsters,” according to police officials.

“Something just went wrong,” said a still visibly shaken organizer of the protest. “Something just went horribly, horribly, wrong.”

The organizer said a group of concerned animal rights activist groups, “growing tired of throwing fake blood and shouting profanities at older women wearing leather or fur coats,” decided to protest the annual motorcycle club event “in a hope to show them our outrage at their wanton use of leather in their clothing and motor bike seats.” “In fact,” said the organizer, “motorcycle gangs are one of the biggest abusers of wearing leather, and we decided it was high time that we let them know that we disagree with them using it…ergo, they should stop.”

According to witnesses, protesters arrived at the event in a vintage 1960’s era Volkswagen van and began to pelt the gang members with balloons filled with red colored water, simulating blood, and shouting “you’re murderers” to passers by. This, evidently, is when the brouhaha began.

“They peed on me!!!” charged one activist. “They grabbed me, said I looked like I was French, started calling me ‘La Trene’, and duct taped me to a tree so they could pee on me all day!”

“I…I was trying to show my outrage at a man with a heavy leather jacket, and he…he didn’t even care. I called him a murderer, and all he said was, ‘You can’t prove that.’ Next thing I know he forced me to ride on the back of his motorcycle all day, and would not let me off, because his girl friend was out of town and I was almost a woman.”

Still others claimed they were forced to eat hamburgers and hot dogs under duress. Those who resisted were allegedly held down while several bikers “farted on their heads.”

Police officials declined comments on any leads or arrests due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, however, organizers for the motorcycle club rally expressed “surprise” at the allegations.

“That’s preposterous,” said one high-ranking member of the biker organizing committee. “We were having a party, and these people showed up and were very rude to us. They threw things at us, called us names, and tried to ruin the entire event. So, what did we do? We invited them to the party! What could be more friendly than that? You know, just because we are all members of motorcycle clubs does not mean we do not care about inclusiveness. Personally, I think it shows a lack of character for them to be saying such nasty things about us after we bent over backwards to make them feel welcome.”

When confronted with the allegations of force-feeding the activists meat, using them as ad hoc latrines, leaving them incapacitated in fast food restaurant dumpsters, and ‘farting on their heads,’ the organizer declined to comment in detail. “That’s just our secret handshake,” assured the organizer
