fritz_monroe, it's great to see how you are progressing. When you first posted here on 10/28/07, you were just beginning your preps but every week or so, I see you adding to your storage. Congratulations on your persistence.

Jerusalem Artichokes are a true asset IMHO. If you don't know they are refered to as survival food, because they can be grown with littlle to no care. They can be made into a mashed potatoes subsitute thats not bad just a little sweet favor to it is about the only differance. Everyone should grow these IMHO.

Thanks, I'm seeing things with opened eyes. I see that there could possibly be a reason for me to have long term storage.

One other thing I'm doing is shopping for my first handgun. I've never been anti-gun, but I've only ever owned plinking rifles and a shotgun. I'll be adding a handgun and probably a rifle to the arsenol. Picking up a pellet gun for my son to start him on to learning to shoot. We aren't able to get to the range as often as I'd like. I can go after work, but not a lot of time to take him with me.

OOoOhhh...... start a thread on what you should get, you'll get 8 pages of everybody opining and debating. It's one of the most popular topics :)

Exactly why I haven't done that.[rofllmao] I have read just about ever post on the subject here, though. So thanks for the input from all you folks. I'll post pics when I get it.

BTW Fritz..... Good to see you're going to get your son involved in shooting, excellent!

IMO, a good air rifle is underrated for an effective food procurement tool. It's a very discreet way (if you have neighbors) to take some birds in the back yard or rabbits/groundhogs in the garden.

Picked up a magnesium fire started and some fire starting logs for the kids BOB (outdoor pack) actually just used it when we went out cross country skiing the other day, pack a lunch, start a fire at the shelter, good practice for him.

picked up some more can goods, mac & cheese, tuna. T.P. (can never have enough)

After a bout with severe conjunctivitis last week....I started worrying about my vision, and what would happen sans contacts, and eye glasses...
I keep my old Rx on hand and the glasses go in the BOB...also, my eye Dr lets you have one free pair with a selection from the cheap frames and I always opt for those as well.....

However, my contacts allow me peripheral vision that my glasses don't...and I love them...

I have a friend who is an optician and after listening to me...he mailed me 30 sets of contacts.....You just never know.

    I feel better having them....

Is that 30 sets of the disposable ones or 0 sets of the actual reusable ones? If thats the reusable ones WOW!!! Now just need a barel or 2 of cleaner and such.

Added some additional food and some TP. Also have an order in for wheat with a coop, just paid for that. Also finally found another potential wheat source.

I have never really bothered to store wheat as I don't eat that much bread to make it worthwhile.

However I read an article on wheat berries, which mentioned all you have to do is soak them for 24-36 hours. I then went out and bought a bag full to experiment.

Having drained the water and added milk, I then heated the whole lot up and started to eat. The phrase "chewing on cardboard" springs to mind. :)

Perfectly edible, but they really need some additional ingredients to make a decent breakfast. Any suggestions?

Having said that, if they last for years, they would make a good, cheap survival food - if rather tasteless.

If you allow it to sprout a bit before eating it, the enzymes will convert that starch into sugar. Then it will be much sweeter than what you ate.

But bread isn't the only thing to use wheat for. How about pancakes, waffles, cake, tortillas, etc. Pretty versitile.

I too bought some wheat and don't relish the thought of eating it all before its "expiration date" in 20+ years (even if I like it).

As for the taste - I might have agreed with you once upon a time that it needs "help", but now I like that "cardboardy" taste (although it tastes "wholesome" to me).

I'm wondering how much nutritional value you'll loose by draining the water? Maybe you're supposed to drain it?

I just recently bought a small mill and am presently considering building a brick oven in my back yard.It occurs to me that home-delivered fresh-baked bread might be a good cottage industry through-out my neighborhood.
