I have an AR15. I have it because Uncle Sam spent a pretty good deal of time teaching me how to use its more capable cousin so the weapon itself is familiar to me. I figure the more comfortable I am with the weapon the more useful it will be. I have been hunting with it in the past when I lived in a different state. It's actually not a bad gun to hunt with if you are a good shot and are not going after anything too big.

Anyone have an opinion on AR15 vs the SigSauer 556? I like the operation of the Sig, but am afraid of the availablitiy of parts come SHTF. Feel like AR15 parts may be more readily available. Also, currenly living in the Peoples Republic of NJ limits me to the SCM model of the 556, A2 stocks and 15 round mags..Working on the better half to move off the east coast, but until then have to live by the law, right?

I had a Sig 556. Parts availability is a bit of an issue. The thing was dead accurate and 100% reliable in the range conditions I shot it in. Then new one with the old Sig folding classic stock is a plus IMHO. the goofy M4 stock I had made no sense- there's no buffer, so why permanently make the OAL longer when you don't have to?

One issue I had with the Sig is that the barrels are not chrome lined. I think this is needed in any SHTF carbine. You may have great ammo and cleaning regimen now, but when TSHTF, you may end up bartering for corrosive because that's all you can get. Having fired corrosive ammo through a non-chromed M1A (in my defense, it was advertised as non-corrosive). I know the damage that corrosive ammo can do in a humid environment in a short amount of time. Lesson learned. Interesting enough, the Swiss military barrels are not chrome lined.... that's a serious oversight IMHO. Of course, I don't see the neutral Swiss ever using the 552 in a jungle anyways...

Personally I have nothing against any of the 5.56x23/.223 calibered weapons, except for 1 thing: I feel the round is a little light in a hunting situation. with the 223 round I don't feel its big enough to take a large deer, unless you get that perfect shot. Even the 6.8 spc in my book is still a bit small. In a perfect world I would like to see that at least a 243 adopted in a black gun format. If not at least build a new round that could be acceptable for hunting, and knocking down terrorists.

And you realize that 6.8 uses .270 bullets... right? Considerably larger than .243.

honestly I did not know what the 6.8 did use that bullet I will look further into that round as a possibility for my shtf gun. I actually thought that it was just nominally bigger than 223 but smaller then the 243 But thank you for that info. I will have to take it under advisement

we have a browning .270 and a remmington .243 for our main hunting rifles but for fun to shoot the AR takes it.

While I admit to having a 12 Ga. shotgun, I do not intend to rely on it for anything except the odd burglar or amybe a dog pack. I'd use a 9MM or .45 carbine before packing all that heavy short range shotgun ammo. Being lighter and having a longer effective range, the semiauto carbine would be far more handy than the shotty.

All the rest have been properly covered, so no point of giving my .02.

Hi all, new here but I like what I've been reading.

For me If I had to pick only one gun it would be my Mini-14 with folding stock. Minis just keep on going and that reliability may very well be the difference between life and death. They are so much more accurate (new ones) than most internet jockeys would have you believe. Lots of options with them too. The .223 round is capable of hunting and defense.

Disciple, they make a Mini in 6.8 too.

If hunting were not a concern then I would go with an AK for defensive purposes. For where I live, shots over 300 yards will be few but the need to punch through cover will be necessary.

If I had the option to have two guns, I would go with a pistol caliber carbine and matching handgun. That way you can feed two firearms with the same caliber and mags. carrying mags that will fit two guns is a huge plus in my book. There are some good options for matching carbine and pistol.

I've read a lot about people wanting to use the same ammo in their handgun and rifle.
Basically, it means that they are shooting handgun ammo in their rifle.
It gives a little more velocity and energy in a rifle than it does in a handgun, but it severely limits the capability of the rifle.
I want my rifles to reach out, and handgun ammo won't make the grade.

My AR in .223, and my Taurus PT92 9mm. That covers short and medium and what is considered long range in my area.

The two are probably the most widely used cartridges in the US. That should give me plenty of available ammo options should I have to scrounge.

Just wondering if anyone remembers an outfit back in Georgia, that designed a Combo Over/Under Rifle/Shotgun in .308/12 Ga. 3" Mag that had SemiAuto Actions on both barrels, and clip feed Magazines. The barrels were 20" for the .308, and 19" for the 12 Gauge. This was, Oh, Twenty Years ago, and they actually took orders for a few months but never got into production. I seem to recall that when they disappeared, there were like 20 specimens in existence. I had two on order, and they were $950 each, as I recall, but they never shipped.
Now that would be a GREAT SHTF combo weapon, but would be a bit heavy for a small man, or woman, to lug around.

I seem to remember Savage doing combination firearms like those, model 24 I think, but the rifle barrel was on top.

Got an older model 24 with a .410 under - .22 LR over. Had it a long time. Mother-in-law had it, needed some cash - offered to me for $125. Not what I'd want for zombies, but nice little all around survival type firearm. We were both happy with the trade.

My first gun was a savage model 24.........It was a single shot for both 410 and .22. I loved that gun....used it for rabbits and sqiurrell, and a few quail now and then. That was a great gun.
