I have been thinking about this thread for a couple days and I dont think it can be answered as I dont think the ideal gun actually exists or is available to the civilian market.
To me an ideal gun would have to be good from 5 feet to 500 yards. Be able to defend AND down wild game ranging from a squirrel to an elk.
I guess first and foremost accurate application of lethal rounds would have to take precedence as security should be your first thought in obtaining a weapon. A .22 will put food on the table but I wouldnt want that for defense and security. A shotgun will allow you to own the immediate area you are in but in a situation where you are facing others armed with rifles, you can quickly be taken out by someone who has more range than you. A rifle is great for range and dropping power but in a rush of multiple threats, a shotgun opening up would be more beneficial as you can post a wall of lead at the direction of the threat.
All in all there is no one gun out there I would or could concider to be the best for a SHTF situation. I would have to pick three guns.
    1. My Ruger 77/22: Accurate as all git out and able to keep food on the table.
    2. Mossberg 500: Able to handle a wide range of ammo and afterall...it's a shotgun.
    3. AR-15 carbine: Accurate out to range, 30 round mags, and a wide selection of ammo (FMJ, BTHP, PSP, penetrators, 55gr, 62gr, 77gr, and 81gr)
Since I already own them, I guess I can say that is what I would have in a SHTF situation.

The absolute, ideal, perfect, SHTF, gun is.......

The one you have in your hand when you need it!!

The tricked out, multi-tool, AR in the gun safe isn't going to help you at all when a rabid animal charges you. But the little .22 that you were plinking cans with just might save your behind.
Or the little pocket pistol .32 that you bought on a whim at the gun show and happen to have in your pocket when the guy with the knife comes around the pump at the all night fill-er-up is a whole lot more valuable than the customized Les Baer .45 in the glove box.

Now more is better, and good tactics to avoid dangerous situations is preferable to being caught in them. But when the excrement contacts the turbine, being able to effectively use whatever you have at hand is by far more important than what you actually have to hand. Just my thoughts on the subject.

I've gone over this issue a lot of times, and I've purchased just about every rifle I could dream of for such an situation, and one keeps standing out better than the rest simply for reliability, ease of usage and firepower. My 7.62 x 39 Yugo underfloder, with a drum magazine. I love AR's, SKS's, Lever Actions, but this rifle for serious issues at 200 meters or less will take care of any predator or problem. Just my $0.02

If given only one rifle it would be an M-204 w/10,000 rounds of 5.56 and 500 rounds of 40mm HE. I'm just sayin'. [gun]

  12. Here is my thought from a law enforcement back ground. How does that weight in? Probably doesn't. Just sound cool to say I guess.

All jokes aside. Pick a weapon easy to carry and what most LEO or Military might have incase you need ammo. If the SHTF your talking about is zombies.

I personally have XD40's, AR15, and 12 guage. Although, I did add a .22 GSG1911. I have young boys, who might be able to fire a round or two if need be from .22

But some buy the odd ammo, and once your out, your out. Good luck on finding any at the stores that are empty.

    Just my $.02

I have a dillon 450 press so I can pump out some rounds. I personally load up 77gr soft points. Knowing what they do on whitetail deer, I am INCREDIBLY confident in this round for a SHTF situation. CCI primers and Varget powder (because I can load 5.56mm, .308, .30-06, and .375H&H Mag with varget) works incredibly well.
I figure if I can drop a deer at range with their thick fur, thick hide, and dense muscle tissue, dropping a threat should not be too much of a stretch. Besides, with a 1:8 twist, it stabilizes incredibly well out of a 20" barrel (I load up 62gr soft points for the 16" carbines).

If I could only have one than without question the gun that wins in the must go bang category imho is the AK-47 or one of it's variants. Thankfully I can have as many as I want and I am personally fond of my SIG 556

As I've seen them work; AR, AK, FAL etc I'm not picky.

The terrain here is mountainous. In "shtf" as I am staying where I am I'd lean towards something with more legs than the 5,45, 5,56 or 7.62x39. As the slopes have trees, I would want more penetration than the 5,45, 5,56 or 7.62x39. For me a 7.62N works.

No doubt I would choose Ruger 10/22 if it was just the one. If your a good shot you can take big game. In the back country where my family is from, old timers will talk about how thats all they hunted with from squirrel to deer(dont think I would try unless I had to ,but you get the idea). Even if every shot isn't a kill shot it can sure send a lot of people hobbling away rethinking their life choices.

But Like slug36 and dragonfly I have to say it would be nice to have my .30-.30. Great thinking game.

I've heard the old timer's deer stories also. After hearing basically a bunch of "one shot; one deer" stories I asked how.. The ones that told me said they'd climb a tree above a deer trail and shoot when the deer walked under the tree. Close range into the brain.
Everyone knows how difficult it can be to put down a hog; yet farmers do it with a 22 rf. Farm people applying what they knew to get what they needed.

On a personal note; I tore the barn apart and never could find the 22 single shot break barrel they used. lol But I did find an ancient Iver Johnson single barrel hammer type 12 ga.
