^^^^Use them a lot on underground power line construction. Of course ours are a bit fancier. We special. Lol.
Friend who teaches craft classes had cut herself a couple times and stopped working with split wine cork crafts. I watched how she was doing it, using a razor knife with both hands on the blade. It wasn't safe, so I looked online for cork splitter ideas. Some of them were little better than how she was doing it, so I built something safe. It's a breech loading, straight pull design and will cut two corks in a row. Splits them perfectly in half, with no danger to the fingers. Plywood discs hold the blade solid and keep it safely covered. 12ga shotshell crimp provides a blade safe stop and guides the piston nicely within the bore. Update: I got this picture with the message "Love love love this thing!"
Cannot be US. I don't know a safety engineer, professional or otherwise, in 50 years of experience, that would buy into that one. Clever AND lucky. Wow.
I have one that would sleep in his car seat tied to a tree on turn 5 at Chimney Rock. Kept him out of other people's picnic baskets.
