Since he's using gun powder as an initiator for the fire I'd expect it would work with a friction cable saw. I know mine gets hot enough to cause smoke when cutting anything much bigger than an inch in diameter. I suspect a regular bicycle cable would work just fine for generating hear against wood. I will try it this weekend. I'm sure I have some rolls of cable and some gunpowder around. Curious to see if it will get hot enough to catch a spark on char cloth. Let the experiments begin. A slow burning flake powder would be preferred. Needs enough burn time to ignite the tinder and not just go Poof!
So far I have learned that my saw is way to aggressive, my cable has potential, and that I'm not a young man anymore. The car window regulator cable was actually cutting the pipe, but got hotter on the hardwood table leg. Hot enough to smoke. If I had stout handles and a standing stump to pull back against with all my weight I can see it creating enough heat to ignite the powder. Me, standing on the table leg, and pulling on the cable with only arm strength didn't create enough friction. Seeing how the cable rolls up where it was stressed makes me wonder if single strand iron wire would get hot. Need a better test stump.
I'm Army and that looks cool even to me. I can only imagine body slamming a home invader on those bastards and saying some witty instead of "damn, that hurt my back".
I know my wife would be mad as hell, but if I got caught buying some of that, she would probably just call me a dumbass instead of leaving me.
