My tree planting has been mostly by birds, but trees grow so quickly here in Eastern NC that I've grown several varieties from seed. I love the natural wind and sun blockage of my Live Oaks, and the impenetrable tangles of Osage Orange and Prairie Crabapple. I've lived here long enough to know what shade trees and fruit trees will grow well in different parts of the property, and which are most hurricane resistant. I'm not terribly upset that most of my lovely old long leaf pines are dying off. They open growing space for pear, apple and fig trees. Pear trees (not that weed know as a Bradford Pear tree) are pretty stout, and can protect more fragile apple trees and precious fig trees. I enjoyed the first ripe fig of the season today, and have the Blue Streak ready for any squirrel that tries to beat me to the rest. Apples and pears are coming along, and my Muscadine vines are loaded this year.
Looking good ! Wife's family lost a Fig tree to Barry, We had to cut it up and on the burn pile it went.
