My Montana Grandma never had store bought bread, it was always homemade and FRESH. I wish now I had her show me, because I've never had bread with that same excellent texture and flavor since. She had probably been using the same starter since the 1920's. Whenever we visited or there was a family gathering her bread was always the center of activity. She raised her family as a widow during the depression, and grew her own food up until her death in the 1980's. The only thing she didn't make herself were dairy products. She even made her own clothes using a pedal sewing machine I'm certain she bought new. I wish I had learned more from her. I don't eat bread anymore, but I'd kill for a slice. I can still smell and taste it. There is none like it.
