Even Junkmail at my house goes thru a crosscut shredder.

As for ATMS, I pull so close that usually there is less than an inch between my side mirror & the ATM, & keep my foot on the brake, never putting it in park.

RH I am glad to see some one take the time to bring this info to others I would like to thank you for it. I am working two rapes right now both are kids I cant go into a lot of detail other than one was a little girl and one was a little boy both were raped by grown men. I arrested both men one a week ago and the other I found yesterday. It was really hard for me to arrest these two and not stomp their guts out on the side of a highway and leave them for the buzzards. I have been doing this for along time and sex crimes is my passion a lot of other L.E.O.'s shy away from them like they are the a curse. I have two daughters one 18 years old and one 16 months old I have to watch myself when it comes to the ones with children. I know if I do what is needed to be done with these bastards some judge will let them walk. Then it is my fault the monster is back on the street. Anyway enough of me rambling on I just wanted to say thanks it 's is people like you that makes my job easier and gives the victims the support they need to recover.

This is the first time I have read this thread. It is truly very informative. My brother owns a karate school and teaches free self defence courses for women through a community program. A lot of the information is the same as RH had mentioned. Something he always is careful to mention is having more than one means of self defense. He is always pointing out that traditional means of fighting is only useful if you have the room to swing or kick.

It is truly a thread that never loses importance. Sometimes it is easy to forget how important.

This is the first time I have read this thread. The thread contains a lot of useful information for risk analysis and harm minimisation in relation to physical and sexual assault. One thing that needs be noted is that although women are more frequently the victims of sexual assault, it should be remembered that men too can become victims of sexual assault. It is likely that many sexual assaults on men go unreported because of the shame and humiliation that the victim may feel during and consequent to the attack. Men also need to take prudent precautions to minimise the risk of such assault upon their person.

Thankyou RH, for not only sharing the valuable information that you posted, but also having the candour to share your own personal experiences.

You're correct Chello, men are indeed victims, not just women, and you are right that it is an often unreported crime. At the Crisis Center, we had a man on staff specifically for those occasions when a man was brave enough to come forward. I've often thought that it must be even more difficult for a man to come to terms with a sexual assault than a woman. Our culture expect men to be able to defend themselves, no matter what so I think there is probably a fair amount of "blaming the victim" in those cases. Men also have to endure the automatic supposition that they are homosexual if they are attacked.

In any case, assault is assault and it is a crime, regardless of the gender of the victim. Thanks for taking the time to resurrect the thread.

I park very close to the ATM when banking, to leave no access to me from outside the locked car.
My mother was nervous about walking to her car in a college campus area, so I made a keychain for her of a stainless chainmail strap about two inches wide, and three feet long, made into a wrist strap, with a large amount of keys attached. This makes a fine flail, and gives her about 18" of reach and fury. She has has several more requests from other coworkers.

Talking safety @RightHand brought this thread to my attention. I was stunned and ashamed. I looked at my behavior, the way I go about my life and realized I am making myself a perfect victim. With a tendency to help people in need, I am actually putting myself in danger. Since reading this I have seen or encountered times that could have been real danger. One morning I parked at a convenience store and a man came and stood at the front of my car. Normally I would have gotten straight out and walked past him. He was waiting for something. Instead I got out walked around a few cars to get into the store thus putting distance between the man and me. I know I should have just left and not gotten out of my car, I need to keep working on safety first.

At work I think safety more then at home. I feel safe at home. At work I will lock the door and I have hand weapons, letter opened, scissors, basic stuff that I will have in my hand or back pocket when some people are in the office. At home I made every mistake when a repairman came. When people stop in the road and ask directions or questions, I have never thought twice about how dangerous it was for me. Normally I walk up to the car and chat with total strangers.

Bottom-line, this thread has impacted how I view my actions. I am now stopping and thinking am I safe prior to actions. It is a work in progress.

I worked security at the university of New mexico years ago and found out how dangerous college campuses can be. A large part of my job was to escort coeds to their cars at night. I can't count the number of times I saw a young woman walk by herself in very dark areas of the campus, they thought they were brave and in control, nothing could be further from the truth. I was told this by one of the campus police officers that any college campus that is close to the intersection of two major interstates have more crime than usual. Lots of creepy people hang around college campuses that are not students.

Another area to really think about how you maintain your personal safety, is with the internet and specifically Craigslist solicitations. Many folks use that popular site to sell/buy and barter items, especially in the metro areas. There have been several incidents, in my area alone, of meet-ups for sale of an item, that have been tragic for the buyer. Never ever go alone, at night or in a remote area... nothing is worth jeopardizing your well being. Always stay in control of the situation!!.

I recently ran across an opportunity to purchase an 'item" but the guy wanted me to come by his house. I used Google satellite to look over his place and made a suggestion that we meet at a local public establishment a couple of miles from his place. He disagreed with that plan and said that if I was not willing to come by his place then there was no sale..... and that right there was good enough info for me. No Sale!! Always evaluate the situation, educate on your options... and if nothing sounds good, walk away. To many folks are trusting of others.... don't be a fool, be wise everyday in every way!!

Speaking of security at the ATM's, I usually unholster my sidearm and lay it either on the console or on top of the dash depending on which vehicle I'm in and which ATM I'm at.

I'm always surprised by the number of people who value convenience over safety. One of the Bank of Am. branches is located in a town not too far from me. Bad place - there is actually a hotel there named Hotel Hooker. Although the intent was to honor Thomas Hooker, it has become the euphemism. Druggies, hookers, the patrons of both, and this bank sits in the middle of all that and has their ATM in an alleyway between two buildings. I guess the patrons need quick access to cash, either from the machine or from some careless citizen

If grabbed... use your hands to grab their little fingers and snap them... it takes approx 8lbs of pressure and you effectively remove their hands as weapons... then leave the AO asap... this limits their teeth and feet as weapons...

I do, regularly. My fave one is on a highway facing traffic. The other one is used during bank hours when there's someone watching out the door to the lobby.

I use one occasionally but the one I do use is completely exposed, no shrubs or other encumbrances but most often I actually go inside the bank. Even then, I'm careful. I don't go often so when I do, I cash checks for 2K or 3K so I'm always conscious of who has observed my transaction.

My freshman year the dorm I was in had girls on one wing, boys on the other. Between the two, down some stairs, was the laundry room, which also opened out to an open space across from some off campus apartments. Some guys had taken to hanging out under the staircases, positioned so you wouldn't see them until you walked past them. More than a few rape complaints surfaced but nothing was done about it. The official word was it was someone from the off-campus apartments, but we had our eyes on a couple of the boys from the other wing because while we never saw any strangers down there we'd seen those two creeps plenty of times and no man does that much laundry. We learned quickly and never went down to the laundry unless we were in a pack of 4 or more, and usually carrying a baseball bat or two.
