Taking the well reasoned advice, I was able to move out to 25 yards. Additionally i wrapped targets in fiberglass joint tape to slow down the big pieces.

    Summary:

    55gr XM193 Ball No penetration
    62gr SS109 No Penetration

Solid Backing (steel plate) kept the ceramic intact longer
Cement board flexed but absorbed energy

    Projectiles were ground to pieces.

Ceramic is awesome but only good for one hit in an area about 8 sq inches. Ceramic compromised, would offer some additional protection but only if rigidly backed.

Lots of ceramic ejected from plates. Ceramic shards thrown back towards firing position 10+ yards.

Again, ceramic ejected towards firing position.

Darn near failure but it did leave a pretty good size dent (2.5" diameter, .125 deep) with fiberglass grid markings in the pine board behind. 1x12 board cracked due to force.

    Nice testing Vis

Thanks for showing us the visual data...so to speak ; )

People can argue the toss all they like...but the empirical data from testing speaks for itself.

It has been known to happen.....

It has been known to happen....usually in the Darwinian school of empirical self testing

Do they have a right to be in the gene pool is the next question?

    LOL

Being in the gene pool, is a matter of how succcessful one's parents have been at being able to produce progeny that reach reproductive capability themselves.....STAYING in the gene pool is another matter entirely...some are less successful than others at achieving that.

    True, but they may reproduce..

But way too heavy for active sports. ;)

Finster Simplify, I'd say more but this says it all.

Shooting any hard targets at <35 yards is pretty dangerous. 35yards seems to be the watermark for the returned projectile/bits of target to do significant damage (require treatment) not only does that added 25 yards give the more than 3 fold distance to travel (there and back) you are a smaller target from 70 yards than from 20.

Plastic, cans and paper only from <35 yards. Explosive targets from >50 yards only.
