Looking like China want's to back their little friends and rattle the saber some more.

China has placed military forces on heightened alert in the northeastern part of the country as tensions mount on the Korean peninsula following recent threats by Pyongyang to attack, U.S. officials said.
Reports from the region reveal the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) recently increased its military posture in response to the heightened tensions, specifically North Korea's declaration of a "state of war" and threats to conduct missile attacks against the United States and South Korea.
According to the officials, the PLA has stepped up military mobilization in the border region with North Korea since mid-March, including troop movements and warplane activity.
China's navy also conducted live-firing naval drills by warships in the Yellow Sea that were set to end Monday near the Korean peninsula, in apparent support of North Korea, which was angered by ongoing U.S.-South Korean military drills that are set to continue throughout April.
North Korea, meanwhile, is mobilizing missile forces, including road-mobile short- and medium-range missiles, according to officials familiar with satellite imagery of missile bases.

U.S. Sending Defensive Missiles to Guam

The U.S. will deploy a missile defense system to Guam as a “precautionary move” against North Korea’s ballistic missile threat, the Pentagon said.

“This deployment will strengthen defense capabilities for American citizens in the U.S. territory of Guam and U.S. forces stationed there,” the Defense Department said today in an e- mailed statement.

“The United States continues to urge the North Korean leadership to cease provocative threats and choose the path of peace by complying with its international obligations,” the Pentagon said in the statement. “The United States remains vigilant in the face of North Korean provocations and stands ready to defend U.S. territory, our allies, and our national interests.”
Also, North Korean authorities today (4/3/2013) banned South Korean workers from entering the Kaesong Industrial Zone, an inter-Korean project just above the border.

The move was widely expected as Pyongyang has slowly ratcheted up tensions with a series of threats in the past few months, putting the South Korean government on edge over the safety of more than 800 workers still inside North Korea.

It does not necessarily need to be a nuke either, but they will attack by rocket, missile and artillery and that 2 to 1 ratio gets much more daunting (especially when they have the masses move south to scavenge whatever may be for the taking. When 1.2 million soldiers and all the civilians cross that border looking for food- SHTF.

Military Size -

The KPA according to Background Note: North Korea has one of the biggest armies in the world with about 1.2 million active duty personnel, compared to about six hundred eighty thousand in the South Korean military(Background Note). This leaves South Korea at a disadvantage of about 2 to 1 if North Korea ever decided to attack. The same article goes on to say that North Korea may be spending up to as much as a quarter of GNP (Gross National Product) on their military (Background). The fact that North Korea is spending so much of its funds on military expenses instead of things such as agriculture is extremely dystopian. The people of the country are starving and the leaders are would rather show that they have military power rather than feed the population of the country.

Former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton says the "risk of miscalculation" on the Korean peninsula is "very, very high" and agrees with the U.S. decision to rush both ground-and ship-based missile defense systems to the region.

"They're well past prior North Korean playbooks on this,” Bolton told Fox News' Greta Van Susteren on Wednesday night, referring to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's threat to launch a nuclear attack on the U.S. and its allies.

“And some of the steps [Pyongyang has] taken — cutting off hotlines, barring South Korean workers from the Kaesong facility — have ratcheted this up to a point where I think the risk of miscalculation on the peninsula is very, very high."

Bolton, a Fox News contributor, said it is not likely North Korean nuclear missiles can reach the United States, but said the U.S. should not underestimate "their capability to do something to South Korea or Japan."

I just find this all very odd. The WH is saying been there done that, just bluster blah, blah, blah.... but don't they understand this is a new guy. We are now dealing with the son not the father. I find the administrations lack of response unsettling. I don't expect the administration to get into a frenzy over the NK threats but this nonchalant attitude really raises a red flag for me. What am I missing????

Two responses sneaked past you, I guess. Moving an anti missile system to Guam, and a couple destroyers with anti missile load outs on patrol between Japan and Korea. MSM has also been handwringing about the noise from Pyongyang and the lack of confidence in the fat boy's (mis)statements. China doesn't know what he's doing either, and has made some behind the scenes moves to quiet him down that don't show in US news, but does in Asian media.

Frankly, the noise coming from SecDef and State do not reassure me. Too much noise of the wrong kind for my taste. I'd be happier if TPTB would simply once, and once only, tell fat boy he's playing with fire and to cut it out or bring it on. About all that's coming from DC is completely wasted mouth music. TR had a better idea, and like then, we now have the stick.

For once, the UN is inactive and quiet, too. Ban Ki Moon (or whoever) is also wringing his hands. Another wasted effort, or at least invisible to us hoi polloi.

As a belligerent North Korea gives mixed signals about its intentions, Sen. John McCain on Monday urged the U.S. to be prepared to shoot down any missile that leaves North Korean airspace.
The hawkish Republican senator made the call in a brief statement Monday afternoon. So far, Pyongyang has not gone through with a missile launch, despite expectations among some that the regime could mark the anniversary of Kim Il Sung's birth with such a launch.
"As the world waits to see whether North Korea will act on its threat to test launch a medium-range ballistic missile, I maintain that the United States should treat any North Korean missile launch as a threat to our national security and our allies, and that we should shoot it down once it leaves North Korean airspace," McCain said in a statement. "North Korea's leaders should have no doubt that the United States of America has both the capability and the will to eliminate the threats they seek to pose to international peace and stability."
U.S. defense officials have already said the United States has the capability to intercept any missile headed toward the homeland -- though it is seen as unlikely that North Korea would fire a missile toward the U.S.
Asked Monday about the absence of any missile test so far, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said officials are still monitoring "very carefully."
"We would not be surprised if that series of provocative actions and bellicose statements were to continue," he said. "We are taking the prudent steps that we've talked about, in terms of ensuring that our homeland is defended and our allies are defended."
He added: "Any absence of provocative behavior or unhelpful rhetoric is a good thing in this case, but, again, I would not suggest that we believe the cycle of behavior has ended necessarily. We are -- as monitoring this as closely today as we were over the weekend and in previous days and weeks. And taking the necessary measures and working with our partners and allies to make clear to North Korea what the result of that kind of decision would be, in terms of condemnation and isolation and further sanction."
Carney said the administration is engaging the Russians and Chinese in efforts to pressure North Korea to back down.
Meanwhile, North Koreans celebrated the birthday of their first leader Monday by dancing in plazas and snacking on peanuts, with little hint of the fiery language that has kept the international community fearful that a missile launch may be imminent.
Pyongyang fired off a rocket ahead of the last anniversary of Kim Il Sung's birth -- the centennial -- but this time the day was simply the start of a two-day holiday for Pyongyang residents who spilled into the streets.
Elsewhere in the region, however, the focus remained on the threat of a launch as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry wrapped up a tour to coordinate Washington's response with Beijing, North Korea's most important ally, as well as with Seoul and Tokyo.
In Seoul, South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin told a parliamentary committee Monday that North Korea still appeared poised to launch a missile from its east coast, though he declined to disclose the source of his information.
Kerry warned North Korea not to conduct a missile test, saying it would be provocation that "will raise people's temperatures" and further isolate the country and its impoverished people. He said Sunday that the U.S. was "prepared to reach out," but that Pyongyang must first bring down tensions and honor previous agreements.
