I bought three consecutive Serial Numbered Winchester 9422 Boy Scout Commemoratives when they were offered almost three decades ago.... One for my son, on his 12th Birthday.... One for his best friends father, to be given to his best friend on his 12th Birthday two weeks later...and one for a friend, who was an extra- ordinarily expert shooter, who just couldn’t live without one of those rifles... My son passed his down to his oldest boy on his 12th Birthday, His friend still has his, but no children yet, and the third, I have no idea...Always like that firearm....
I started out using a toaster oven doing small batches til I got the hang of it. I know a lot of guys do, but I don't use the powder from Harbor Freight on boolits anymore. Goes on too thin and you have to do a 2nd coat a lot of the time.
Ok, I gotta share, just added another Winny 1895 to the collection! I have always loved these, but only recently took a real interest in them, and I now wonder what the hell took me so long, I should have been running these since day 1! .405 Winchester, hard hitting, very accurate, and serious speed when things get sporty! THis one was made in 1923 and shows lots of use, but is real nice and tight and the barrel is flawless!
My "Christmas Project" is refinishing the stock and forend off the Marlin. A couple of weeks ago I stripped, washed and acid washed both, then steamed out the what dings would come up and gave it all a light sand.... Given the heat here over the past couple of weeks (and low humidity) I was happy that a couple of weeks was enough drying time. Added a little stain on the 26th, it went on darker than I expected and like a numpty I did't do a test spot first, once I had an even coat that was drying I took a rag and some metho and thinned out and smoothed the stain a little. Gave them a couple of days to dray and... Started oiling them up yesterday....so far so good....
After a month of work (a oiling here and there and allowing it all to cure) finally screwed it all back together today.....the light was a bastard outside (and I was melting) but you get the idea...
That looks great! Hopefully you will never have to replace that forend. The picture of the stripped wood brought back memories of fitting one. That thing has way more subtle curves and tapers than you'd think. Nice contrast on the grain.
Thanks both !!! And yes HD I agree I would not want to try and make one from even a rough blank. The inletting inside to accomodate the “hump” on the magazine tube alone would be a nightmare to get right !!! If it got to that I would probably hold my nose and buy a set of the various synthetic or laminated varieties that are available !!! I think that it is however pretty safe given this won’t see too much time in the bush with me !
