On July 9, 1962, the US launched a Thor missile from Johnston island, an atoll about 1500 kilometers (900 miles) southwest of Hawaii. The missile arced up to a height of over 1100 km (660 miles), then came back down. At the preprogrammed height of 400 km (240 miles), just seconds after 09:00 UTC, the 1.4 megaton nuclear warhead detonated.

Damage? Street lights in HI blew out. A system installed prior to 1940 with little lightening protection. The telephone system was affected - and an even older technology and physical plant.

So? So now most all of the grid is hardened against lightening strikes. Much of the hoopla on EMP has become a cottage industry, seeking Govt handouts for certain players. I have a lot of things to think about, on a scale of one to one hundred - and EMP attack is about 10,000. Fun for starting a post-apocalyptic novel, in real life, not so much.
