In the days of cheap-ass McMansions, sometimes it is fun to look at what life was like in a smaller - and better built America.

Yes. The Spartan line (Manor and Mansion) were built in a WWII leftover aircraft factoryin Tulsa OK. . Very well built, in fact.

When a mass-produced, slapped together shack in Levittown (800 sq ft) on property sold for $8K new, A full sized Spartan sold for $4K+ and had to go on a rental lot for most people.
The Spartan Executive Mansion (what a wonderful name, eh?) is an 8 x 50 footer - 400 sq feet.

Now that the Tiny Home (or, the economy is so shit I can't find a good paying full-time job) movement has caught on, these oldies have come into their own. I just saw a restored/updated 38 footer selling for $95K.

Before you cringe, restored Airstreams go for that or more.

    BYW - $4k in 1955 is the = 36,560 of today dollarettes.

I wouldn't buy a restored unit, but gently used units are still to be found - usually at good prices.

    1961 Bambi.

First year for the popular Bambi, it replaced the 16 foot Pacer from a year before, but with a whole new body, axle and layout. The trailer was not customizable, and the Bambi remains much the same for all three years. The optional Jalousie window in the door vs. a vent door, and double vs. twin streetside bed was about the only options. For 1961 and 1962, the easiest way to tell a California from Ohio Bambi is the location of the toilet – streetside from California, curbside from Ohio.

A total of about 1100 Bambi’s were made between California and Ohio, not counting the 1964 Bambi II’s.

The Bambi is one of the most popular of all the Airstreams, owing to its diminutive size, cute factor, the fact it was totally self-contained with a very livable layout for two people and was ideal for weekend trips. The Bambi was also offered as an inexpensive Airstream of the time, and as a result, many of the “as-found” trailers are in very sad shape and can cost up to $10,000 to restore. It is not advisable to overly customize or change the Bambi layout, as that seems to wreck any resale value. Very popular with the vintage car group.

Have had similar experiences with several varieties of spirituous liquors as a subaltern, which I have fortunately survived and outgrown. Not even I have been desperate enough to partake of Dr Jurd's. [yukface]

I'm Based in Sydney, but my travels occasionally take me further afield.
