I recommend you read Malcolm X's autobiography, an "As Told To" book which Alex (Roots) Haley penned. I've never seen anything that so clearly sets out a vision of how the African-American community could free itself of dependence on the government, of charitable well-wishers, and of professional shame-mongers. Malcolm X had a vision of a black community in every city - a place with black-owned stores, black-owned restaurants, black-owned everything. He was assassinated after he accused the leader of the Black Muslim church of using young female converts as sexual partners and then abandoning them.

Malcolm X wasn't anybody's long-term layabout: he wanted real black power, not symbols, and he would have led black Americans to a position of political and economic status - if he had realized that he had to guard himself against those who said they wanted to revolutionize black america, but who were content with just enough revolution to keep themselves in power.

I met Jessie Jackson once, briefly. After about three minutes, Mr. Jackson had me half convinced that I was personally responsible for every scar on Kunta Kinte's back: the rev had the rap down pat - all about white privilege and ancestral oppression. I interrupted him, and told him he had a very nice suit on, and asked him who his tailor was. He walked away.

Malcolm X was killed because he represented a threat to the folks who had wormed their way into a sweet deal.

I don't know if I would endorse his vision, but at least he had a good idea of how things could be.
