having spent a summer in the Komi Republic (CIS) - these are real deal photos of the road system in rural Russia and the CIS

and Alaska

I shot a lot of the photos seen on the web about the Komi Oil Spill - these guys are using the airboat to 'bulldoze' mats of oil downstream to a collection point.

When people bitch about the TAPS pipeline here in Ak, I tell them they don't have a clue.... This is how the "State" protects the environment. The pipe was laid in the times of the Old Soviet.


spills (leaks, really) are far too common.

 

On the Kolva River, this is a "clean up crew" - yup, a guy with a shovel.


The airboat would push rafts of oil down to a collection point where it was removed manually - either by hand of with backhoes.


The working conditions were - swell. Later, the Komineft folks took to burning the oil....


Smoke column was both visible from space and caused air traffic issues - This was a small burn - about 40 hectares. It sound like frying bacon as the water off-gases....
