And by the summer of 79, they had more than quadrupled to 99.9 cents per gallon. All summer, never breaking $1, sometimes dropping down to 97.9 cents.

Ah, to be old, and have such memories. Wait! What did I just write?!?

This "guy" never even had a "man card" to begin with. What a limpwristed fairy!

I got my first car in summer 1976 while in the US Airforce, stationed at Chanute AFB, Ill. for tech training. Gas was rising, it topped at $1.85/gal, and I had just bought a 1971 Dodge Polara with a 383 big block! We were certain if it hit two bucks a gallon it'd be the end of the world! How silly we were. I remember gas at 27 cents a gallon in high school in the early 1970s just before the first cobbled up "oil crises" hit. There was one time my Honda CB175 was out of gas heading home from school about 1973, I popped into a gas station and put my last thin dime - literally ten cents - of gas into it to get home. o_O
