A punt gun is a large, heavy shotgun that was used to hunt waterfowl in the 1800s and early 1900s. Punt guns were too big to fire from the shoulder, so they were mounted on a small boat or punt.

I've got an old ad somewhere that advertises punt guns and 10ga "cripple stopper" shotguns. Market hunters would've hunted a bunch of waterfowl to extinction if conservationists and hunters like Theodore Roosevelt hadn't been paying attention.
