In my Airforce days, late 1970s at Tyndall AFB, Fl., I was an avionics tech working on the Convair F-106 interceptors among other types. Gen. Chappie James was head of Air Defense Command, his office was in Wash. DC, but he'd come down to Tyndall to put in his flight time in the "Six", an F-106B two seater. We techs and mechanics doubled as crew chiefs. A couple times I had the honor of helping the General strap in, and I'd guide the bird out and salute him as he rumbled on his way. He:d begun his career in WWII in the squadron known as "The Tuskeegee Airmen", went on to fly jets in Vietnam. He was the first African-American to reach his ultimate rank. RIP, Chappy!
