I earned my bones early on, spending three semesters in high school in a course called "Library Aid", though I only got credit for two, I liked it so much. I've loved books all my life.

I worked for a few months working construction down there in Lumberton in '79 or '80 ,, there was a fella there that owned an auto parts store beside the lot we were building a gas station on . The owner came over the 1st day or so we started . He said I know how you out of town construction workers like to go out at night and hit the bars ,, but if you want to go out ,, let me know and I'll take you out and show you where to go ,, he said you boys definitely, " do not " want to to end up in the wrong place here. So we took his advice.
About 12-15 yrs ago I dated a Lumbee gal for almost 5 yrs ,, I went down there a few times with her visiting.
Went to a family reunion once ,, I just sat around listening to stories from the folks,, that place is not what it used to be ,, but it is definitely a place you don't want to get on the wrong side of one of the locals at.
I was listening to one of the stories ,, a distant Aunt of my ole lady's,, was asked about her son from some guy ,,I can't remember if the lady's son was still alive or not. , ,, but evidently ,, years back ,, the lady's son had a cousin or something,, and another guy ,, beat him up real bad , cut him or something,, and then that guy ended up in prison for something. Well the lady's son figured he was going to settle the score ,,, so the son , went and robbed a store ,, then went outside and waited for the cops to show up ,,so he could turn himself in. The cops show up ,, he turns himself in ,, goes to court and they gave him 7 yrs . He went to prison himself to try go to the same prison and settle the score . The lady said everytime her son would get to the prison the guy was at ,, the other guy was moved to another prison. She said her son spent about 7 years in prison trying to settle a score and never could catch up with the guy.
That there fellas is a friendship ,, and loyalty .
