    Not so much that English is absurd (even when it seems to be so), but that words have been incorporated into it from other linguistic roots, and the conventions for their spelling and pronunciation change over time...or remain the same, but inconsistent with words adopted from other linguistic sources...

    Longevity.....etymological origin Latin...

    Lasagna...etymological origins Latin / Greek...

    I think I would prefer the inconsistencies of English than having to remember the correct gender for each noun and adjective in some other languages.
