One uses what one happens to have on oneself at the time it is wanted that best suits the purpose. Carry both!

I prefer a C cell battery long handled torch over the D cell. It is just as durable, and throws similar light but it is lighter and more manoeuvrable as a club.

 

Could be a scene from my childhood if they were wearing long trousers, leather boots and a mechanical watch.
