Only because I was in the back of the VW Bus, or Willy's and out of reach. I still remember the sound of a leather belt clearing belt loops. At least there was a warning sound there. Mom was silent with that wooden spoon, and accurate too.

I got a flat back skull from no warnings and back and shoulder scars from the 50/60s

 

I was in the back of the station wagon , in that rear facing seat ,,, if pops had to stop the wagon , and get out and walk to the back of the wagon to administer his justice,,, then you knew you were about to get an extra dose of it .
