I went to chaser school with a Staff Sergeant that some unit had sent to be a brig
chaser. (Those are the guards who accompany brig rats while they do stuff like
pick up trash and clean offices.) The Staff Sergeant, who I still occasionally see
wandering around town forty years later was told to report back to his unit. I thought it
was because he was a Staff NCO. One of the instructors told me it wasn't a rank
issue. The Staff Sergeant only had a 70 GCT score and didn't qualify to be a chaser.

Years later I heard why they required a 75 minimum GCT for brig chasers. Apparently
two chasers had been monitoring a four man detail from the brig that were cleaning
offices. One of the prisoners had used a phone in an office to call a cab, jumped out
a window and was in Maryland before he was apprehended.

I served with Staff NCO's that couldn't read or write. A person with a GCT of 10 would
be dumb as a box of rocks. All their brain power would be exhausted just keeping their
heart beating and lungs sucking and blowing. I can't imagine them understanding any
weapons system more advanced than a pea shooter. If we fill the military with bodies
that lack the mental capability to handle the modern battlefield we are doomed.

 

Those types are called "cannon fodder". They are placed up front to keep the enemy busy slaughtering them while the real troopers flank and attack.
