I knew that the soldiers in the image weren't doughboys, having seen the same image many times in its proper context pretty much from the time I was old enough to take an interest in military history. I am aware of the distinctions you mentioned, but the Brits aren't generally much into flag burning, and I think that they are a tad more respectful of monuments than some other nations. Without a doubt there are many Brits who are racist, though by and large they form a very insubstantial proportion of the populace. Yes "lads", was the clincher, doughboys would have used the word, 'guys' instead.
