Just as continuing to fight on, by the GOC of US forces at the end of the conflict in SVN was not a military option, continuing offensive operations in Afghanistan was not an option for Milley either. The scale of operations, and the US military infrastructure in Afghanistan at the time of withdrawal was of a magnitude that made an orderly withdrawal, covered by at least tactical deception, making surprise virtually impossible. Although the withdrawal of ANZAC forces from the Gallipoli Campaign achieved virtually total tactical and operational surprise, the ANZACS had the luxury of several months of meticulous planning and preparations for the withdrawal, allowing for much of its equipment , weaponry and livestock to be effectively evacuated, or denied to the enemy. It's easy to kibbitz and take cheap shots at Milley for his role in America's withdrawal from Afghanistan, but if in doing so, one ought also question the judgement of the Commander-in-Chief (Bone Spurs Trump) who appointed Milley to the post of US Chairman,of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the first place. It should also be remembered that Trump, as Commander in Chief, had essentially surrendered the political and military initiative in Afghanistan to the Taliban, well before the Biden Administration had any say in the matter. The USA has the characteristics of both a constitutional republic, and a representative democracy...both elements are not mutually exclusive...

As to the quotation misatributed to Thomas Jefferson, I challenge you to provide a verified citation of it dated before the advent of the internet.
