Sadly too true these days. The POS terminals in many fastfood places have pictures of the food items on keys, so the illiterate employee can make the sale.
And making change out-of-pocket? I've done that back when I worked at a game arcade in the late 1980s. Haven't seen anyone do it since.

Polio was a world wide scourge...and although Jim Crow was an American phenomenon, Australia in the 'golden age' of children referred to was not particularly sympathetic of its indigenous peoples and its non heteronormative citizens either. Racism and anti LGBTQI treatment of its citizenry was not confined to the USA, and I wasn't suggesting that it was so.
The point that I was making was that golden age mythologising of the past glosses over all of the less appealing aspects of that same past that are perhaps not worth returning to.
