Lately I'm not so sure everyone I meet can even read. I've been doing the same job, having people read the same rules on the same sign for sixteen years. I have a pretty good idea how long it takes the average person to read it. Lately I've noticed that it's taking lots of people substantially longer to read these rules. I'm not talking about a few seconds more. It takes them a couple minutes more than what I expect a literate person would need to read it.

Is it because I "threaten" them with a quiz? Because it's not in text-speak? Really? This is a very effective technique I've been using for over a decade. I only ever ask one question, but I tell them "I know what questions to ask" to know if they read the whole thing. I sent one guy back to really read the whole this this weekend after he failed my quiz. The record is still held by a Marine I had to send back three times to find one answer.

Am I stressing them out? I watch their eyes and have frequently seen people looking like they'd reached the bottom, and go back to the top to start reading again. Maybe I should make them read it aloud? That would probably be considered hazing.

Funniest shooter I ever had during the safety brief was a beautiful young woman. I asked her to read the rules and she started reading them aloud. She was sounding out each word phonetically the way a child who was just learning to read might. It was painful to watch. I stopped her, taking a chance that I might really hurt her feelings and said "You're kidding, right?" Thankfully, she was. Not often I meet anyone who can pull one over on me, but she came close.

Sad really - most folks are now used to watching a video rather than read and comprehend an instruction.

I blame TV and shitty publik skoolz

B4 2019 , I was an instructor for a Major name manufacturer.
I had 20+ techs at a time and some could not read well .
Three instructors and 6 courses on a weekend , Many times I saw the deer in the headlight stare.

My biggest concern is that many of these folks may one day have to read or write a five paragraph order, under pressure and with little time, with no help from any electronic devices. Nothing new, I met conscripted Marines who had managed to hide and slide in the Marine Corps for decades while functionally illiterate. I think we'll survive...most of us anyway.

I can't read /translate braille , but can read power wire hanging from a pole (tools required) ..

 

our education system is failing them terribly!!! many never learned to read but still graduated...

math same same and don't even start with history or geography and much of the history they got is a twisted lie...

bring back civics??? shut down the education department and close public schools...

make em pay for the education the old way or let the locals pick teachers n pay on performance???

the old one room school house actually SEEMS to have worked WAY BETTER!!!

many educated that way LEARNED and excelled in life!!!
