Tesla was a great engineer and inventor and is oft overlooked in history for the significance of his contributions. But to say he “invented electricity,” nope. Galvani, Volta, Ampere, Faraday, Davy, Oersted and others “discovered” the foundations of electricity decades before Tesla was born. Georg Ohm’s law relating voltage, current, resistance and power predates Tesla’s birth by about 30 years. Michael Faraday had developed a motor about 20 years before Tesla was born.

He did some excellent work around motors and especially polyphase motors (that was the foundation for today’s 3 phase motors) and was a driving force for AC power distribution. The patents and licenses made him immensely wealthy and he established a company pursing other patentable inventions and profits. He did get rather consumed by the concept of wireless power transmission. That didn’t work out so well. This and other dead end research pretty much depleted his money in the end.

So, great talent and definitely highly influenced life today, but probably not quite the saint the meme portrays.

 

And that larcenous reprobate Edison should have been in prison for the way he cheated Tesla.
