Handgun laws have changed in Michigan. We no longer have to take the handgun in for a "Safety Check".

You do need a permit to purchase if you are doing a private sale.
You can go to any local PD, they will run the background check and if you clear .. hand you the permit to purchase. Some departments are known to delay the process by not having folks available to handle the paper work, just go to a different PD. Some have a stack of clipboards with the forms and pens ready to fill out your golden ticket and you are in and out in under 10 minutes.

If you are buying from a FFL, they do the background check and provide you with your purchase permit copies that you send into the local police dept who forward to the state police.

Not as onerous as it use to be but yep, if you buy a handgun in Michigan, the staties got a record of it.

 

This information is out of date. 10 day purchase permit went away at least a decade ago.
In the recent past CPL holders could walk in and buy without a background check, but this was eliminated a couple years ago as part of the legislation legalizing weed.
Detroit was oddly out of the news during the summer of BLM riots. I give credit for that to Mr. Craig. He was an outstanding leader for law enforcement in the city.

 

I remember this, in a land of long ago.

 

We still have one station,, an older fella runs it ,,, when you pull up to a pump ,, a guy will walk out ,, pump your gas ,, and wash your windshield. They just don't have the bell anymore. If they still had the bell ,,, I believe it would instantly send your thoughts back in time .

 

And who remembers driving in and out or back and forth just for fun? I was guilty until I went to work part time at a station.
