Nowhere else? Really? It was a tradition in Hampstead, NC that I remember long before the area was built up.
About the time that bumper stickers reading "If you like Hampstead now, You should've seen it before YOU got here!"
became popular with long time residents, somebody pulled all the shoes off the tree. In protest, somebody else stenciled brightly colored shoe prints all over the tree soon after. They've faded away now, but the legend of the Pender County shoe tree remains in my memory.

Oh, such memories!

I had a junk man that lived down the road that would "flat tow" cars like that. Sparks flying, occasional parts falling off. Steel prices were high and our road was a disaster. Enough people eventually died from catching a rut and crashing in the trees that it was "re-surfaced." Lowest bidder job. Macadam resurface with medium (3/4-1 1/2") river rock, sand and tar.... and more tar and sand. Rinse and repeat. It was even worse. After a few more deaths we finally got it properly paved. I had a stripped RX7 chassis to dispose of. I was worried that Ernie would drag it down the new pavement, but he put the front bumper on the wheel lift and ran the cable from the boom under the back bumper and carried it off the ground looking like a big tail on the wrecker.

 

That'll hold it. That load ain't goin' nowhere!

THE amazing fact is, the higher you go in the corporate structure, the smaller your balls become.
