Dictators are phobic about criticism, being ridiculed, and freedom of speech. Back in the day, German and Russian lampooners of their respective dictators might be executed if they were fortunate, sent to a concentration camp or gulag if they were not. Perversely, once in a concentration camp or gulag, prisoners of conscience and/or with dangerous sense of the ridiculous, found, in many cases, the freedom to mock their masters that they could not enjoy in open society. When governments start jailing stand up comedians and cabaret performers, you know that a society's freedoms of speech, association, and assembly are under serious attack by dictators and self serving oligarchs.

You are correct...Australians are far from perfect, but George and Sarah are low hanging fruit, and easily lend themselves to being lampooned...I realise that they are as much an embarrassment to many Americans as Tony Abbott, John Howard, Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard are to many Australians. The difference being that satire of Australians would be largely lost on most Americans, particularly the ones who believe that Australia is a country in Europe.
