They had it easy...not everyone had the chute to push bales onto the wagon. We had to toss them from the field onto the wagon, where more of the crew would stack them. Straw was worse than hay, too.

 

Yup. The baler I remember dropped the bales in the field. I watched the old men hefting the first few bales to decide if the settings on the baler were right. Once they had it right it was off to the races. It was all I could do at 15 to grab both strings with gloves on and using my knee, get the bales up on the wagon. And there was Ray Shotwell, probably 95 years old then, bare handed, hooking a thumb under one string and grabbing the other with his fingers, throwing bales up on the wagon one handed without ever straightening up.

I spoke to him sitting by his huge pot bellied stove the winter before I joined the Marine Corps. He was 98 then. Two thugs broke into his house, thinking it was abandoned. He grabbed one of them by the belly with one hand and squeezed! He said the guy screamed "He's stuck a needle in me!" and the two of them took off as fast as they could. Having seen those tough old hands at work in the hay field I'm sure that left a mark.

Makes it sound like ancient history. In NC we had 16-17 year old students
driving school buses until 1988.

 

Aldi’s grocery’s stores has some very acceptable wine called Winking Owl that last time I priced it was $2.89 a bottle. Comes in 5-7 different varieties.

 

Thanks for the lead. I will stop by this weekend and see what they have locally.
