Up until 1980, civics were still taught alongside the Constitution...and study (and discussion) of the Federalist papers went hand-in-hand...in the coal country of SW PA at least.

You were fortunate. In Detroit we had Social Studies. If we studied anything earlier than 1863 I must've missed it. I learned more from asking questions about what I saw around me in 1967-68 than I ever learned in Social Studies.
