Here in central mo. I see the exposed mantels all the time in the Amish stores.

 

I'm trying to pin down any history on that picture, but without shades and the chance large bug that breaks a mantle, they're pretty safe. Most of the big moths and June bugs that circle my lamps do just that...circle. In the three years that I've been enjoying lamps on the porch with open mantles I've not had a single mishap. In fact, in the 20 years or so that I've had lanterns hanging on the deck I've only lost two mantles, and they weren't even lit at the time. I don't know if it was the thorium or starvation that did the poor frog in, but I replaced those mantles four years and eight days ago, and they're still intact. Through hurricanes, and all four seasons outside 365, the 220F (My long-tern exposure test lantern), sheltered only by a heavy canopy of grape vines, never needs more than a few pumps and a flick of the sparkie to light right off.

I was honestly surprised at the sheer number of vids 'testing' these oddball ammo.

If I see this at my local Walmart I just might poke a hole in it to see the frantic response.
