That wasn't by chance down at the seawall in Naha, was it? We used to go down there to race Saturday nights...

 

I worked at Tomatsu Tire in Sunabe, so it was a short drive down 58 to the neighborhood where I parked my car and walked down to the traffic light right at the South side of the runway at Kadena AFB. Beautiful palm lined highway, with no houses on either side, no cross traffic, and no lights until you got into Kaneku, a mile away. Three lane wide street racing in both directions, and watchers at the Kadena McDonald's to keep an eye on the Kadena Police Station. They'd drive through with their lights on and everybody would just go home.

I watched races here, insane motorcycle curve racing in Oyashi, and the long straightaway along the Henza seawall on Miyagi Island. I saw too many deadly crashes there, and since it was posted, in english, "No Drag Racing...No Watching" it was a problematic place to make an escape from, since there was only one road onto the island. I'd already been on international legal hold for driving 3x the posted limit and had to pay a hefty fine for that. Watching was safer, and cheaper anyway. Fun times.
