I had a piece of a piston - the largest piece we could find of any of them - from a HMMWV that was assigned to an MP unit on an 875 acre auxiliary landing field, on my desk. The HMMWV had been assigned there for a while, and every driver had signed off on the trip ticket that the oil level was correct and nobody had reported any unusual noises. The destruction of the engine was so complete that it was absolutely incomprehensible that the driver had been slowly idling around the perimeter road as he'd reported. More likely, the poor 6.2L diesel had been wrung out far beyond its RPM limit before it started to come apart. The young MP received non-judicial punishment and was reduced in rank and fined the value of the engine. I suggested that the MP unit be assigned bicycles to make their rounds of the field. The CO thought that was funny. I wasn't laughing.
