It was all just thoughts and questions ,, my Red Ryder has a slightly bent barrel , so windage and elevation is a must ,, but it still shoots and it's good for parts ,,

My slightly used modern flint lock rifle would have once been considered an assault rifle - no paper trail with it either.

Wife watches all the crap they show on the teevee, she asked me one day if I had any of those so called assault rifles, she was meaning anything like the AR15. Truth is I don't own any AR's. SKS, M1A and M1 Garand style don't count.

No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else.”
    ― P.T. Barnum

“Nobody ever lost a dollar by underestimating the taste of the American public.”
    ― P.T. Barnum

“The best kind of charity is to help those who are willing to help themselves.”
    ― P. T. Barnum

“Money is, in some respects, like fire. It is a very excellent servant, but a terrible master.”
― P. T. Barnum, The Art of Money Getting : Or Golden Rules for Making Money

“Young men starting in life should avoid running into debt.”
― P.T. Barnum, The Art of Money Getting: Golden Rules for Making Money

Mr Barnum may have traded in humbug and hokum, but he was a businessman first and always... and a successful one as well. Worth having a look at some of his thoughts.

But however mysterious is nature, however ignorant the doctor, however imperfect the present state of physical science, the patronage and the success of quacks and quackeries are infinitely more wonderful than those of honest and laborious men of science and their careful experiments.

    from BT Barnum's
The Humbugs of the World (1865)

    Finally -
Barnum, born on July 5, 1810, is most famous today for the circus he only began in his 60s and a phrase he never coined. The man incorrectly credited with having said “There is a sucker born every minute,” built his reputation as America’s greatest promoter, welcoming thousands into “Barnum’s American Museum” in the 1840s, stuffed with more than half a million oddities, and earning half a million dollars in the 1850s by making the soprano Jenny Lind a popular sensation.

The Great American Shtickmeister, Barnum entertained the masses spectacularly while manipulating them lovingly. He turned an articulate, 2-foot-tall, 16-pound 5-year-old (and distant relative) Charles Stratton into an international celebrity, “General” Tom Thumb. He wowed crowds with faked genetic anomalies including Joice Heth, an elderly African-American woman he claimed was George Washington’s 161-year-old former nurse. There was “the Feejee Mermaid,” half-monkey, half-fish, all faux mummified. Barnum delighted our usually thrifty, sober, and sour forebears with his money-making chutzpah, moving lingering museum goers out by luring them with signs proclaiming “This Way to the Egress,” a fancy word for exit.

Barnum supplemented his discerning eye for the compelling spectacle with a great ear for enduring aphorisms. America’s self-proclaimed “Prince of Humbug” shamelessly, greedily, said “every crowd has a silver lining.” He admitted: “Without promotion, something terrible happens... Nothing.” Refuting conmen who had long observed how frequently suckers were spawned, Barnum offered the kinder, gentler insight that “there’s a customer born every minute.”

He dabbled in local politics, but I could find no quotes or other 'sayinys' from him on the political times in which he lived. Which, given how things have become so politicized today, might just be something of a blessing....

Before he was a museum namesake, television and radio host, lecturer, author, and freak-show magnate, Robert Ripley was a simple newspaper illustrator with a zest for explaining the impossible. Along the way to international fame, he accumulated knowledge of thousands of oddities, girlfriends from around the world, a curio-stuffed house on a private island..

Robert started as a newspaper cartoonist, seeking to explain the seemingly unexplainable.

    Robert Ripley - Wikipedia

His newspaper panels, I refuse to call then cartoons, .had an impact that belied their simplicity. For example -
On November 3, 1929, he drew a panel in his syndicated cartoon saying "Believe It or Not, America has no national anthem."

Despite the widespread belief that "The Star-Spangled Banner", with its lyrics by Francis Scott Key set to the music of the English drinking song "To Anacreon in Heaven", was the United States national anthem, Congress had never officially made it so. In 1931, John Philip Sousa published his opinion in favor of giving the song official status, stating that "it is the spirit of the music that inspires" as much as it is Key's "soul-stirring" words. By a law signed on March 3, 1931, by President Herbert Hoover, "The Star-Spangled Banner" was adopted as the national anthem of the United States

Another American that showed how many people's innate curiosity could yield a good living....

Oh it is there...(now)....interesting that you object to the lack of images in post#22666, yet have no criticism of other posts without images throughout the thread....If you hadn't progressed beyond comic book literacy, you may have noticed that in this thread there are plenty of posts that consist of text only content, commenting upon other posts that do have a motivational poster...just that you are selective about which posterless posts to criticise....ergo, your irritable grumpy bum criticism of post #22666 is merely an ad hominem attack on me...rather than making any sensible contribution to the discussion.
