Maybe a separate "Motivational Posters" thread in the Inferno for more questionable Posters, and leave the original one in the main area for everyone to enjoy? The best of both worlds.

I really don't want to encourage this type of imagery. As CoC Rule 3 says, "occasional" and although the Inferno is a little more lenient, the same rules apply.

My comments are directed more broadly than in reply to your suggestion, tulien.

My feeling is that the motivational posters thread ought stay where it is, so that the general public can enjoy the wit and wisdom of what is posted.

Taste and style are very subjective things, and although the members of SM have a broad license to post almost anything; with that freedom comes the responsibility of being mindful of what we post, and mindful of maintaining the good reputation of the site that we all enjoy being a part of and value. Personally, I would prefer that we are seen as a welcoming site for both genders, and a diversity of belief systems and world views that provides sound, valuable information on survival, prepping, self sufficiency and self sustainability. Littering the pages of SM with 'cheese cake' diminishes the value of the site, rather than enhancing it IMHO. Don't get me wrong...I'm all for 'cheese cake'...(though my prurient interest in it has diminished over the years), but, if I want to renew my acquaintance with it, my interests can be satisfied by cranking up my favourite search engine with but a few keystrokes and mouse clicks.

Perhaps the 'cheese cake' material might be placed in a restricted access - 'site supporters' premium service forum? It might help enlarge the site's revenue stream somewhat. ;)

I say leave it alone because everything is fine!!! This is the same kind of thing most of us complain about and now some of you guys are for it: One person that does not like something so we have to make the whole thing PC for everyone. Sorry RH, if I believe something is not right I will say something just like you did. If there is one MP thread here and another in the Inferno, who is going to be the PC Master that decides what goes where??? Putting anything in the Inferno to "protect the children" is also a joke, since most kids in the 6th grade probably know how to operate a computer better then most of us and can just sign up as a member and have access to the Inferno ohno .

chello, I was with you 100 % until you got to the final paragraph. I like the idea of a revenue stream but not at that price. As you said, with a few keystrokes you can find anything to suit your taste at thousands of other web addresses. Why do we need it here? I don't think it adds to the value of our site, and those drawn to us solely because of the imagery probably have no interest in the basis for the SM community.

Chell, I can appreciate your view, and RightHand's view, completely; and it is not that I necessarily disagree with you that we can, and do, go too far in our off-topic posts, on many occasions. But as SM is not only a "survivalist" site, but has a distinct social component as well, and folks do differ on discussion boundaries in any social situation, I have to agree with Mountainman as well when he asks, "who is going to be the PC master?"

I personally post very little in the Motivational Posters, though I do view them often, and I'm fairly sure that I personally haven't posted anything objectionable on that thread; but I think that drawing the line can be a very subjective undertaking. I'm not complaining about the job that our excellent moderators do in that regard, because their work speaks for itself. This is a very friendly and welcoming site because of their diligence and objectivity. I'm just throwing out a possible compromise.

Simple statements: SM will not become a porn site, soft or hard. There will be no separate subforum where anything goes.

Mods and admins have no wish to take on the mantle of PC cop, we ain't got the time or the wisdom of Solomon. SM depends heavily on grownups being grownups, and having a pretty good idea where the line between acceptable and beyond lies. In the past, we've had to take members to task behind the scenes for posts that were just barely over what the most tolerant of staff could stomach. Bans have resulted as well from some that just couldn't take a hint, and always with off line discussions to see that one or another staff wasn't being oversensitive that day.

In truth, my first reaction when RH raised the question was to delete the posts. Second thought was to leave them up and gather some member's opinions, glad I did. The discussion has been frank and useful. Pending other behind the curtain discussions, the posts will stand, as will the discussion, so that folks that wonder how we do business can see.

It's true, if we want "porn" we could simply do an internet search. How I see it, as far as what's been posted here, if there's no nudity, it shouldn't be considered offensive --as far as "nudity" is concerned. This is the MOTIVATIONAL POSTER thread, not the NAKED HOT CHICK thread. Just saying...

Can we see more images and less talking? =)

The last paragraph was said tongue in cheek, as I hoped my 'winky' would convey. Call it 3am silly tiredness lol.

I also support the comments made by Ghrit concerning the current discussion, and appreciate his decision to not delete the posts that have generated the current discussion and exchange of ideas.

I agree tulian, that SM has a social dimension to it, reflective of the fact that survival and prepping is not necessarily a solitary activity, and that such activities of necessity will often require social interaction; be it within family, common interest group, neighbourhood or community contexts. We here at SM are a community, and this particular discussion is an example of "how we do business", as ghrit puts it, in resolving an issue that is causing some members a degree of legitimate concern. It also has to be said that the process of prepping and survival does not occur in a moral / ethical vacuum, the COC exists to help the SM members in negotiating solutions to moral/ethical dilemmas that all can reasonably live with. The difficulty is in how the COC is to be interpreted, which is often a problem when commandments are hewn in stone.
