The timeline of the "initial" fire is now being discussed on the radio. Something about plastic pellets being ignited by the hot parts from the failed axle. How far apart are these temperature sensors? One of the videos I attached earlier indicated that an axle that was well below critical temperature was cut in half in just over six miles after the bearing failed. NTSB on East Palestine toxic train derailment: '100% preventable' I'd like to see a more detailed timeline and car position relative to the fire. Since the ignition point of most common plastics is nearly double that of the highest reported axle temperature, and since any parts heated by the failed bearing started immediately cooling when the friction stopped, I'm curious how this could happen. Is it to distract us from the intentional release and torching of chemicals later? Ohio train derailment: Controlled burn of toxic chemicals went 'as planned,' PA gov says The NTSB says their report will take two years to complete. If we ever know the truth it will surely be a troubling read.
As the railroad goes, it's not a job it is a religion as we call it. It runs 24 7 day and night (23 years so far). Defect detectors are close to 20 miles apart. The tonnage we move the things we haul are in sheer bulk. They are the things that make up everything in everyone's life and products that we all us on a day to day basis. The general public really has no clue what we do or move but everyone likes the things they buy. We are in everyone's everyday items from coffee creamer to tvs. Now as the electronic brakes they are calling for is BS, Positive Train Contol is a joke. The railroads are only out for one thing(they are not nice people) the profits and stock prices. The men and women who work on the railroad take pride in what we do the company we work for do not. They are only after the price of the stock. So that saying the defective detector may have gave the crew no defects when they went over it doesn't mean 2 miles down the road the bearing went bad. Walked may trains when it defect defector told us we had a hot box and nothing was found wrong( yes we have temple sticks to check the bearings) .the frieght we move move thing are going to happen. Each railcar is about 3 to 4 semi trucks, think about that for a minute, u would not be able to get on the interstate. 150 rail cars 16000 tons of products that make up things everyone uses on a daily basis. Been a really good job, but the railroad never sleeps. By no means a I sticking up for the railroad, anyone that has any questions about the railroad (have 23 years and my father in law has 36 years) its the only place that as soon as they hire you they are looking at ways to fire you.
Almost every male in my family as long as anyone can remember worked for Norfolk-Southern (Southern Railway before the name change). I never took the plunge. Knowing plenty of people that worked for CSX too, I can say by their stories that railway employment is the same whichever company, and operations appear so as well. My great Grandfather worked for Southern Railway at the Spencer Shops most of his life as a carpenter, and various other family has been Conductors, brakemen, and 1 engineer. I can say that no one that day in Ohio planned to derail, and I highly doubt anyone on the train knew about the hotbox and decided to continue on anyway. It's a big deal, and no one wants to blow their career over a time schedule. I have carried food and drinks to my brothers crew 60 miles away because they were waiting on a repair crew for a hotbox in the middle of nowhere. They, at least N-S, drilled safety into everyone constantly to the point every one stayed scared for their job if they messed up. As M99 said, almost everything, or components of it, moves by rail. And, as M99 said, as soon as you get a few years in they look for reasons to replace you with someone new and cheaper.
