Son has been stalking a ten point buck on some property we have just for hunting--- 5 acres surrounded by forest service property. Using 270 reload ammo. I use an old Herters #3 press and Lymans 45 edition, Herters loading dies. Neighbor back in the early 60's when I was a kid got me interested and turned me on to the Herters catalog (hunting ,fishing, camping --source for just about everything). Bummed me out when they went out of business. Any one else remember Herters?
I do remember Herter's. Only ever saw one catalog. I think it was their very last one. Oddly, I ordered something from Cabela's in the mid '90's and the lady that assisted me was named Herter. She said I was the first person to ask about her relationship to the Herter's catalog company.
Herter’s was the best! I always looked forward to their catalog. They were THE source for waterfowl equipment…their burlap wrapped dekes were the best ever made, rode true in the water unlike the old plastic ones. They were heavy as hell, but bulletproof! (Literally)
I haven't had a slow weekend at the range since the day after Hurricane Irene in 2007. I had no shooters that day until almost noon. There's ammo out there, but it's not cheap.
I used to share my links to buying ammo but then they started selling out so I don't do that so much anymore.
I have 500 rounds of 6.5 creedmoor on the way. It's taking forever. Just bought this. Maybe I'll do a review when the ammo arrives.
Brother called yesterday looking for a specific type of ammo for a ''friend'' for practice. I'm like offer him 50 bucks for his now almost useless ''club'' and PPP
Too many folks are hesitant to buy ammo because they are sure that the price will go down, and they will look/feel foolish. The fool is the guy with NO ammo! Any gun owner/hunter should at a minimum, have a hundred rounds of ammo that he NEVER uses, A smart gun owner/hunter has even more ammo. If you're really smart you have lots of ammo and can reload! A genius/prepper has the ammo, he reloads, he has bows, and he has black powder weapons! Guess which one I am!
Machinist I worked with that grew up in the Great Depression told me many stories of bagging White-tailed deer with .22lr. Deer skulls have cracks that form a "Y" on the top of their head. Hit the junction of the three lines and they go down hard. Tracking is a written language. A skilled tracker can track an individual through a herd, tell where it was going and why, what it was thinking/feeling, etc. You can only focus on hunting for so long. Traps work unceasingly for you.
Checked out the local Gander Mtn. yesterday after hearing it would no longer carry any hunting or fishing supply's They weren't kidding those A-holes have nothing left, Generators galore cloths spiffy campers things like that. Wally world had maybe 3 boxes of 12 gauge suckers Gander has gone to the Dicks !
Field and Stream had of all things Winchester 307 180 grain stuff 48 a box of 20 Bunch of high dollar 9mm 10mm,few other high dollar stuff,Passed on it all Was looking for an antiquated 30/30 shell holder RCBS
Rural King is having a sale on some of their ammo, however it's all FMJ and was over-priced to begin with. I considered getting some but the utility bill was over $400, as was the water bill (50 year old swimming pool), just paid the homeowner's insurance, and property tax is due soon. Looks like I'm gonna be on a tight budget till Christmas....it's a good thing that I got a raise at work...it started yesterday!
Budget wise this time of year SHTF with property taxes, personal property taxes, insurance home and truck, and now we got big time inflation on food, gas and shortage. Been waiting a month for the parts for the lawnmower.
I hear you on the parts for the lawnmower. Mine blew a headgasket and it's on national backorder. The broken supply chain has finally hit me.
