First she took my cigars, now I can't even have real beer.

On the brighter side, the pain is decreasing.

Being handicapped and mobility-challenged myself (permanent health issues), I use a rollator. The walker's big brother - four wheels, two have hand brakes, a flip-up seat with carry bag beneath, and I added a water bottle holder and hang hook for a bag. Need to add a cane-carrier. It was my late mother's rollator, which she called her "truck". The switching of the outside wheels to inside might work, but they have the brakes. Have to check the mountings. Good idea if it works!

I wondered if the new hip was lighter than the old soggy hip, so I jumped on the scale. I didn't quite jump. More like I crept up on and mounted the scale.

    The verdict?

A can weigh whatever I want as long as I keep one hand on the walker. ;)

I have one of those red four wheel hot rods in the garage. Physical therapist nixed that idea as a fall risk. Phooey!

I did find that after flipping the wheels inboard on three previous walkers, that this one was by far the most challenging. Where the others had wheel spindles that just slid out and we're easily reversed, this one had splines cut into the leg tubes and required a wrench and a mallet to swap.

When I mentioned to a friend that I didn't watch TV to watch during my recovery he seemed surprised until I explained that it gave me more time to read.

Yesterday a bag of books appeared on my door step. The Marine Corps Association bag immediately let me know who'd left them.

I tried to call and thank him before Taps last night, but the line was busy. He says "There is life after eighty.". ;)

Fine additions to my library. I'm reading them on a historical timeline starting in Zululand.

Week 1 has passed and I am completely off pain meds and settling down into a pattern of physical therapy (twice daily) and icing for 20 minutes (four times daily). In between is mostly napping and reading. I can sit and lay down much more comfortably now.

What I am having to learn all over again is walking. What I've been doing to get around for many years has been more of a modified Monkey shuffle. It gets me around, but it won't help the muscles in both legs to regain the strength to keep me moving.

    Walking is hard!

I've learned to stand with my weight evenly distributed on both hips and to walk with my toes pointed straight ahead in a heel-toe fashion. I think toe-heel is more natural for humans, and it'd how I walk in the woods and on the beach, but I'm not going to argue that with my physical therapists.

Historical Body Mechanics: Walk Medieval! (Outdated!)

What I immediately noticed was that I am putting only the slightest weight on the walker now. Standing up straight and being constantly aware of the direction my toes are pointing. At the end of week 2 I hope to be able to carry the walker just off the ground and be ready to graduate to walking with only a cane for stability. That would free me to go outside. :) I have already seen the fruit trees budding and the flowers beginning to peek out. Would be nice to see the arrival of the Purpla Martins back at their Summer home.

I got to walk outside in the sunlight briefly today. Made it across the porch, down the walk and made two laps of the physical therapists car before I was ordered back inside by the tiny physical therapist lady. She was right of course, and I was happy to lay down and apply my big ice pack to the hip after she left. I did go out to sit on the porch on my own in the late afternoon. Managing the doors was interesting, but I could back out with the walker. One door closes as the other opens.

Tomorrow we start working on stairs. :)

"When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us. Defeat is nothing but education; it is the first step towards something better."

I made it down the steps to the back yard and up the hill to the mailbox today. That was plenty.
    Icing my hip now.:)

Don't rush things. That connective tissue needs some gentle exercise to rebuild. Good you're getting around!!

    Very wise advice.

My body has let me know through pain when I push too fast. I think that's a benefit of being completely off any pain medication. I can fine tune my physical therapy and daily activity because I can feel what's going on. Pain can be very helpful if you pay attention.

    :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
Well ,,, since ya graced me with a comment,, and know a little about knee surgeries,, which is where my question lies ,,, I'll ask ya my question.
I had a total knee replacement surgery in January,,, I've been working it trying to get full motion back in it . I finished my last day of rehab this past week. So ,, as far as bending at the knee ,, if I'm right,, I think I remember the therapist say that normal bend is 117 to 122 degrees bend,,, so ,, on my last day ,, my bend was between 107 and 110 degrees . At 110 degrees ,, there's quite a bit of pain involved in getting there. I'm going to try and keep working it in hopes of getting full motion ,, but when I work it hard ,,,, when working it ,, I tend to believe the no pain , no gain method ,,, so I try pushing it ,,,, it's pretty sore and hard to stay up on it the next few days ,,,, so ,, here's my question ,,,, if I don't push it so hard ,, I'm able to do more the days after ,,, which I have plenty to do ,,,, so ,, if I don't push it it ,, and let it heal to where the time when there's no more pain in the knee ,, will I get that full range of motion back ,,, or should I keep going with the no pain , no gain method to get that normal degree of bend ??? Thanks for your help .

@SB21 First, everyone is different. I know that my friend, I'll call him Joe, spent hours working om geting back to where he could play golf. It is his life. So, I had to look some things up as to what flex is needed for various activities.
    Listed in Degrees from zero...

    65 to walk
70 to collect something off the ground
    85 to climb stairs
95 to stand from a sitting position
    105 to tie your shoes
115 to squat or cross your legs
    125 covers most activities

The thing Joe has always said is that placing his ball and tee and getting a golf ball from the hole was his biggest challenge. At times, he looked like a Giraffe trying to drink from a water hole. He worked on flexibility almost daily when he was not on the golf course. Following rehab, he would do supported shallow squats and forward shallow lunges. He worked up slowly and I remember his saying it was painful but not to where he had to ice up although he did after a round of golf. after his last surgery he had to start using a cart to get around the course but before that he was walking. That, he has said; was best for strengthening the support for his knees. Combined with the flexing exercises he has regained fairly decent range of motion. Joe is 76.

Keep working and be sure to follow your doctors' recommendations, not those of some fool on a forum.

    [LMAO][LMAO][LMAO]
I don't consider you a fool ,, otherwise, I'd have never asked you ,,, but I know what you're saying.
That range of motion scale is pretty cool ,, if by tying your shoes , and crossing your legs ,, means picking your leg up and resting your ankle just above the kneecap of your opposing leg ,, then that scale is just about accurate ,, because that is one of my problem areas . Thanks for the info .
Sorry Hot Diggity Sir ,,,,, wasn't trying to derail your thread here ,, I hope you're healing up quickly and back to normal soon ,, take care .

I have graduated to my regular cane again today.
No worries about leaving it anywhere right away. I can't get 3-4 steps without needing some support.

I've been saving my last Orion beer for a good long time waiting for a special day. ;)

    All things in moderation.
