Friend of mine...is a prepper in the mountains of Eastern Tennessee. He was well prepared and did not suffer much like the folk in Western North Carolina. He was without electricity for a long time but has a large propane tank and a 6500 watt generator hooked up to his house...and located in his water well cinderblock pump shed.. He did ok on his generator during the black out but his phone...land line... did not come back on line.

He has canceled his comms....land line and I think internet too and gone to a system called Star Link.

He called me on his cell phone...and apparently the service works through his cell phone....his land line number no longer works.
To my surprise the audio quality on his cell phone on Star Link is better than his olde cell phone system and also better than his olde land line..as well.

I am going to let him trial run the system for awhile and then think about looking into it based on what he learns over time.

We can also hook up via e mail and also both of us have our extra class ham licenses...and have talked for some 45 or more minutes on ham radio...75 meters in the evenings....just shooting the breeze like on a land line. Distance between us as the crow flies..is some 400 miles.

He knows but I reminded him to do an oil and filter change in his generator as soon as he can ....if his generator even has a filter.
And then put it back on the ready line..

Just like you can't depend on the police responding in a timely matter if your life depends on it --you can't depend on the government to respond to you in a time of natural disasters.

One thing that could have saved many lives would be to have a member(s) on a household stand watch whenever server weather, wildfires, social unrest, etc. threaten. Don't just go to bed and hope for the best! Those standing watch need to take this duty seriously and remain alert and aware of conditions that may threaten. It wouldn't hurt to have everyone sleep fully or semi-clothed, and with a pair of shoes next to the bed. You need to be ready to leave in minutes and fumbling around in the dark wastes valuable time. Have a vehicle parked outside, because the garage door won't work in a power outage, and some folks can't or don't know how to open it manually. There is usually some warning of most emergencies, use that time to prepare wisely! You will want to get family members and pets indoors and ready to move, collect medications, papers, photos, etc.!
