Take a good look at a map, or Google earth, and see if there are any railroads going in the right direction. Even if the roads were clogged with people or cars, there should be a service road parallel to the tracks for service work on the rails and switches. It may prove to be a back up plan, and I have never heard of a road block on a service road like that.

    Excellent point Kel.

Down here at least There seems to be a bit larger right of way on the tracks compared to some places I've noticed. Most all GPS systems show RR tracks as well.

Bear in mind that predatory thugs aren't totally stupid, and E&E might be needed since one might expect them to think that an RR ROW might be a place to set up a "toll booth", so to say. The same might apply to power lines, but I'd think less so. I imagine that using any kind of ROW means you'll have company, sheep ain't stupid either, at least not all the time.

Words to remember and live by!!! Every one of these rules applies to action's while under movement that should be adhered to... always.
Some may apply to defensive or offensive operations.... but they fit most any scenario including getting home when the SHTF, bugging out or performing intel gathering (scouting) and security patrolling of your BIL.

One of the rules to remember, is never walk on the road, ROW or used trail but to travel adjacent of it at some distance... which will allow you to avoid ambushes, road blocks and the other things that may be in wait for unsuspecting travelers.

Consider getting a copy of local forestry maps... they have all roads, paths, logging trails, year around water supplies, terrain features, etc...
they are cheap and well worth the effort...

Fundraiser for walker with killer commute reaches $230K

    "
Robertson starts his daily commute by riding a SMART bus from Woodward near Holbrook in Detroit to a bus stop near Somerset Collection, an upscale mall in Troy. From there he walks about 7 miles — regardless of the weather — to the factory. At the end of his 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. shift, he foots it back to the mall and catches the last bus in to Detroit, taking him to the State Fairground at the city's border. From there he walks home in the dark, about 5 miles
