FYI, buying new buckets can cost you $4 or more at the store. If you have a Walmart with a bakery nearby (or probably ANY supermarket with a bakery, or restaurant, perhaps), they will sell you their empty buckets for $1 each. They're food grade, since that's what their frosting comes in, for cake decorating. Small buckets are ~3 gallons/~11 liters; large buckets are ~5 gallons/~19 liters in size. They will typically offer them with or without the lids, and they're typically rinsed out (though I still give them a quick rinse at home).
I have successfully gardened in them for a few years now, and the cost makes it worth asking for them.
