I like to think spices... to help out. Many will not be available and the make droll food tastier. Don't forget the GI's favorite tabasco sauce... It's been proven that with enough tabasco sauce you can eat just about anything....
IMO ,best long term storage is gardening . I chose aquaponics. Reason is the water is recycled regularly: fish tank to garden to fish tank ,what is lost is due to evaporation having near complete ecosystem . Second LTS is recycling waste and making methane/alcohol and organic waste into fuel for both mechanical generators and live flame for heat and cooking. Having enough to can as well for the learner times ahead. "Always assume there to be leaner times ahead." Gardening failures raids both 2-4 legged intruders and insects as well. Maintaining a hive of bees and lady bugs and other valuable insects also provide something for the future depending on the destruction of the present. IMO, it is arrogant to think the worst can't happen.
you maybe right @arleigh for aquaponics but if you are depending on it for a food source and you dont have a system up and running now, its not good. Ive been practicing aquaponics on a small scale for over 2 years ... with low inputs.... aka no electricity just water and fertilizer..... its a lot more difficult than it sounds to maintain plants and get any produce. I lost alot of plants to algae at 1st. Im not a fan of beans only for sprouting as there is more nutritional value in a sprout than in cooking and eating. @Seacowboys ran some serious experiments with aquaponics. Dunno where his posts are these days, but a search might uncover it.

About that canned lard Canned lard safe to eat after 64 years From a post WWII CARE package the famous can of lard... In 1948, the United States distributed canned food to war-ravaged German residents. Hans Feldmeier, a student at the time, kept the tin of lard in case of emergencies. Feldmeier, now 87, noticed that the can had no expiration date. His curiosity brought him to a lab, where a food expert found that "the lard was rather gritty and tasteless and hard to dissolve, though quite edible," says BBC. Officials think the lard stayed fresh thanks to preservatives and an air-tight can, reports The Local. They did note that the lard looked old. Still, German agriculture official Frerk Feldhusen concluded that the lard "would stand up to today's definition of being fit for the dinner table," reports the Associated Foreign Press. Couldn't find any canned l did find two brands of bottled lard... for the DIY types Rendering and Preserving Lard and for those that want to know more Home (lardlovers.com)
