A new paper out says the sun may be able to produce a type 1 nuclear emp effect on earth. But this is probably a 1 in 5,000 to 12,000 year event.

The first few dozen or so high altitude nuclear tests were done with balloons, as No one wanted to put a nuke on a rocket that could blow up on the launchpad or fly all crazy.
